Musical Styles on Guitar
The guitar is an incredibly versatile musical instrument, played in virtually every style and setting around the globe. We offer instruction in five basic styles, and we can personalize our instruction to combine elements of these and other styles.
Some styles combine guitar and singing, while others are purely instrumental. Because so much guitar technique is common to all styles, most students who begin in one style are generally able to move to another without having to repeat prior levels. A member of the faculty can help you determine the best style for you or your child.
Rock Guitar
You sing and play classic and contemporary rock and pop songs, on either acoustic or electric guitar, using a pick, learning both rhythm and lead guitar parts.
Roots & Blues Guitar
You play blues, country, and old-time songs on acoustic steel-string or electric guitar, using the fingers of the right hand or a pick, learning guitar instrumentals with some or little singing.
Folk Guitar
You sing and play both old and new songs from many traditions on acoustic steel-string or nylon-string guitar, using a pick and/or right-hand fingers, learning strum accompaniments.
Steel-String Fingerstyle Guitar
You explore contemporary compositions and arrangements on the acoustic steel-string guitar, using the fingers of the right hand, learning guitar instrumentals, improvisation, and composition, with no singing.
Classical Guitar
You explore classical music of various periods on the acoustic nylon-string guitar, using the fingers of the right hand, learning guitar compositions and arrangements, with no singing.
Personal Guitar
You aren't sure what kind of music you want to play. Maybe it's all of the above, or none of the above, or something completely different. In that case, you and your instructor will create a unique study program, just for you.
