Musical Experience & Knowledge

Musical Experience & Knowledge

We welcome students with absolutely no prior musical experience along with students who have been playing for many years. Depending on your prior experience and current musical knowledge, we’ll recommend that you study at one of these five levels:

Beginner
You have no hands-on experience with your chosen instrument, and you probably do not yet know how to read music.

Advanced Beginner
You already have some limited experience with your instrument and have developed some basic technical and musical skills and knowledge, perhaps including some ability to read music and/or tablature, plus limited experience playing with another person.

Musical Experience & Knowledge

Early Intermediate
You have been playing for a while and can play some songs and compositions without too much difficulty. Now you want to move into specific styles, add to your repertoire, and build your technique. Your reading skills are becoming better developed, and you have some knowledge of music theory and chord construction. You may have experience playing in a band or other group.

Intermediate
You have good technique and a working knowledge of your instrument as well as music reading and music theory. You are comfortable playing with others. Now you want to broaden and deepen your knowledge and become a confident soloist, accompanist, and ensemble player.

Advanced
You are an experienced and confident player and performer, and you want to advance to a new level, possibly with the idea of making music your career.
