History

Since October 2009, Marin Community Music School has provided instruction, coaching, and performance opportunities to people of all ages.

Our school opened under the name String Letter Music School because our original facilities, funding, and staffing came from San Rafael-based String Letter Publishing, the source of Acoustic Guitar and Strings Magazines.

In May 2011, we reorganized as an independent California public benefit corporation under the name Marin Community Music School.  We received tax-exempt status as a public charity under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code in February 2012.

The School is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

While String Letter continues to provide major funding, we are a community-supported public resource, receiving contributions and in-kind support from many individuals and families both within and beyond Marin County.

Our program is flexible and changing.  We evolve according to the needs and interests of our community and the resources we have available.

Currently, we are focused on strengthening two program areas:  While the majority of our students study and play the guitar, we are building our service to students of piano, drums, violin and other bowed stringed instruments, flute, and voice.  We are also enlarging the schedule and range of opportunities for students to play, rehearse, and perform in regular ensembles and bands.
