Just Back from Jazz Workshop
Pianist and staff instructor Joey Edelman just led an hour-long reading of two standards, Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage and Johnny Mercer's Autumn Leaves, at the Marin Community Music School's weekly Sunday afternoon drop-in jazz workshop. This was the third meeting of our newest drop-in workshop series, and I enjoyed my dual role of bass player and occasional kibbitzer on guitar chord voicings.
Joey's son Max Edelman provided a powerful, steady rhythm from behind the drum kit (I'm pleased to announce that Max is also now available to provide drum instruction at the school ...) and Steve Buhler weighed in on electric guitar. It was an hour-plus of good fun, learning, and renewed appreciation for the power of a great tune.
We were still hanging around chatting when staff instructor Gabriel Diamond arrived to lead the weekly electric blues jam and I left to the sound of a five-piece band kicking out the jams on "Crossfire" ...
As you can see, weekends are starting to groove at Marin Community Music School, starting with a Friday evening rock band workshop, and winding down with a Sunday late afternoon acoustic roots jam. Please join us!
