Bluegrass Flatpicking Guitar Intensive
Saturday, February 18, 2:00 to 5:00Workshop Format We’ll do a lot of playing in class, repeating lines and phrases together, as we learn new ideas and cool tunes.
Material, Concepts, Techniques, Repertoire In this class we'll learn flatpicking lead guitar parts for fiddle tunes, bluegrass instrumentals, as well as breaks to songs. Part of our inspiration will come from the styles of Maybelle Carter, Don Reno, Doc Watson, and Clarence White. We'll discuss improvisation, from several angles: "playing with the melody" (introducing new twists without losing the melody) , substitution of "hooks", blues lines, and other ideas. We'll also touch on right hand pick technique and left hand fingering tricks.
Who should attend? Students should be able to play rhythm and have some experience playing leads.
What will participants leave with? I’m hoping they’ll enter a new “comfort zone” in finding the melodies and improvising on them.
